2022 was better than your average year — at least in King County — for the number of Fourth of July-related injuries and property damage.

Seattle’s Harborview Medical Center says it handled 45 fireworks injuries in its ER over the holiday weekend. Last year’s figure was above 50.

In past years, fire crews have had to deal with numerous fires and people hurt.

Did a new law to make fireworks illegal in unincorporated King County help?

“Historically we’ve had quite a few different types of fires, house fires, medical injuries, and things like that. It seems like it actually did help out,” South King Fire and Rescue’s Brad Chaney told KIRO Newsradio.

“It is good news for us. We worked really hard with King County to try and get the public education piece out there, informing the residents that there’s a new law.”

King County reported at least one minor house fire over the weekend, and investigators are looking into the source.

Chaney says other than that, things were quiet.
