A helicopter crashed at Skagit Regional Airport in Burlington Monday morning, injuring two people.

The incident occurred just after 10 a.m., according to the Skagit County Sheriff’s Office. Both the pilot and passenger inside the Robinson 44 helicopter were taken to Skagit Regional Hospital after suffering injuries in the crash.

“The pilot just had some very superficial injuries, and his female passenger had some significant injuries, nothing life-threatening, fortunately,” Skagit County Sheriff’s Office Lieutenant Jeff Willard told KIRO Newsradio. “Looks like mostly from the broken glass, and then probably the impact to the ground on the left side there.”

The Robinson R44 helicopter is a single-engine, light utility helicopter primarily used for training and recreational purposes.

Willard said that while he can’t comment on the exact cause of the crash, from his observations, it looked like the helicopter hit a light pole.

“I’m not sure how it exactly happened, but it appears that there was contact between a light pole and the helicopter, so that may have created the chain of events that led to it coming down,” he said.

Burlington Fire District 6, Skagit County Sheriff, and the Port of Skagit Emergency Response team responded to the crash. The responding organizations are currently working with the FAA and the NTSB.
