Hope Solo files motion to dismiss assault charges

Dec 11, 2014, 11:10 AM | Updated: 1:26 pm

The lawyer for Seattle soccer star Hope Solo has filed a new motion to dismiss assault charges against her, saying one of the victims was actually the aggressor.

Solo, 32, faces two counts of fourth-degree domestic violence assault for the June incident, involving several family members at a Kirkland home.

Solo is accused of assaulting her nephew and his mother after getting into an argument.

According to court documents, the 17-year-old boy told police that Solo was intoxicated and began criticizing him. When he called her a name and told her to leave the house, an argument ensued and she allegedly punched him in the face and tackled him.

But in the motion to dismiss, attorney Todd Maybrown says he has evidence the victim, who is 6’9″ and weighs 280 lbs., was the aggressor.

Maybrown intends to prove Solo suffered a concussion during the incident. Court documents say the teen hit her in the head with a broomstick after she attacked his mother when she tried to intercede.

Maybrown says in the motion the alleged victims have been uncooperative and refused to provide statements.

The case is set for trial in January, but the Kirkland Municipal Court has set a hearing date for December 30 on the motion to dismiss.

Despite calls for her suspension pending outcome of the case, Solo has continued playing for the United States Women’s National Team and the Seattle Reign FC. The former University of Washington All-American is a two-time Olympic gold medalist.
