Jesus-Osama crab travels around the world

When I first posted this
article last week, I had no idea what I was starting.

In the last eight days, the picture of this crab has made
websites around the world. I’ve seen posts in India,
China and the U.K. Television and radio stations around
the U.S. have also picked it up. I can’t say I’m
disappointed. It’s sent a lot of traffic to
MyNorthwest.com.

But this wouldn’t have happened without gawker.com and the
Huffington Post. These two
articles really put “Jesus/Osama Crab” on the map.

I’ve traded emails with the Canfield Family, which caught
the crab and then tossed it back (one because it was
female and two because they didn’t see the markings on the
bottom until they saw the video of the day), and they
think it’s fine. They aren’t upset that people think they
drew the image on the crab or faked the whole thing
because they know they didn’t.

For those of you who are upset that I originally called it
the “Jesus Crab,” I have this for you: I called it that
because it was my initial impression and because it was
the Canfield’s initial impression. But I can now say that
every time I see the picture, I have to admit that it
looks a lot more like Osama bin Laden than Jesus.

Again, no one is claiming this is the image of anyone or
anything. It’s simply the markings on the bottom of a
female crab combined with shadows, though I have seen
other pictures on the web that show crabs
with similar markings.

So again, see what you want or nothing at all. Just have
fun with this and remember this crab is likely still out
there off Hat Island west of Everett.
