The Kingdome may be nothing more than a fond memory, but the taxes to pay for its roof live on.

Thanks to a law passed in 2011, excess revenue generated by hotel/motel taxes to repair the former home of the Mariners, Seahawks and SuperSonics will go to more than 100 arts, cultural and historical organizations.

The non-existent roof was paid off last March, KIRO Radio’s Dave Ross points out. Thanks to a booming economy, and the law, of course, various organizations will benefit from a stadium that was demolished in 2000.

It’s too bad sports fans didn’t get to enjoy the stadium’s new roof very long. Six years after the roof was fixed, the Kingdome was imploded.

“So today, the King County Council will go ahead with funding 100 nonprofits,” Dave said. “All because in July of 1994, four ceiling tiles detached and fell from a long-gone stadium.

“I suppose they could also have paved a few roads, but the law is the law.”
