A King County Metro bus collided with seven vehicles along five blocks in Seattle Wednesday morning.

The bus driver had a medical emergency, the Seattle Police Department told KIRO Newsradio.

The incident started near 80th Street and Greenwood Avenue North, where the bus careened downhill, hitting vehicle after vehicle along the route, according to police.

A witness reported watching the bus slam into one car, then another in rapid succession as it traveled northbound on Greenwood.

Passenger intervenes to bring King County Metro bus to a stop

A passenger on board noticed the driver was in distress and intervened to bring the bus to a stop near 85th and Greenwood, police said.

Three people were transported to area hospitals as a precaution. The bus driver was taken to Swedish Cherry Hill. The passenger who stopped the bus was taken to Harborview Medical Center with complaints of arm pain. The driver of a Seattle Parks and Recreation truck and trailer that was among the vehicles struck was transported to Northwest Hospital.

The bus sustained heavy damage, with both front corners crushed and the front windshield shattered. A King County Metro heavy tow truck was on scene removing the vehicle.

The cause of the driver’s medical emergency was not immediately disclosed. The incident remains under investigation.
