A man seen leaving the area of a knife fight in White Center was shot by a King County Sheriff Sergeant Monday afternoon.

The 54-year-old man, along with several other people, fled the area of the fight as deputies arrived at the scene in the 9900 block of 15th Avenue SW. As the sergeant got out of his vehicle, the man began walking toward him, holding a knife at waist level, according to the King County Sheriff’s Office.

The man believed to be a “transient,” refused to obey orders from the sergeant and continued to walk toward him. That’s when the sergeant fired two rounds at the man’s stomach.

Another deputy used his stun gun on the man, but it is unknown if it made contact.

The wounded man was taken to Harborview Medical Center in critical condition.

The sergeant is on paid leave.
