A woman killed in Georgetown after her car was struck by a King County Sheriff’s Department SUV has been identified as 41-year-old Seattle attorney Sarah Leyrer.

Leyrer graduated from Seattle University’s School of Law in 2003, before going on to work for Seattle’s Office of Labor Standards as well as Columbia Legal Services. She was honored by SU in 2013 with the Spirit of Service Award.

“Her unfading curiosity fueled her tenacity for justice,” the OLS said in a written release. “Sarah lived her life in service to others, with a passion for advancing worker and immigrant rights and racial equity. Her legacy and spirit will leave a lasting imprint on her colleagues, friends, and the countless workers in Seattle whom she championed throughout the years.”

According to the King County Medical Examiner’s Office, Leyrer was killed by a blunt force injury to her head. The death was ruled an accident.

Leyrer was reportedly in her parked car on the southbound side of Airport Way South near South Nebraska Street on Saturday afternoon, when it was struck by an SUV driven by King County Sheriff’s Deputy Reggie Thomas.

The deputy’s family released a statement on Monday, saying that he “suffered a massive stroke prior to the collision, and remains in critical condition in the intensive care unit at Harborview.” Thomas has worked for the department for 30 years.

The Seattle Police Department is being tasked with investigating the collision. They believe Thomas’s stroke was likely responsible for the crash.
