A woman who spiked her ex-boyfriend’s drink with poison was sentenced Friday by a Seattle judge to 20 years in prison.

Janjira Smith was living with Roger Lewis in 2006 when Lewis returned from a business trip with news that he had a new girlfriend and was planning to get married. Detectives say that the news did not go over well with Smith, who tried repeatedly to change his mind.

On Oct. 6, 2006, Kirkland police say Smith sent a bottle of his favorite liqueur, Jagermeister, spiked with a toxic insecticide, to Lewis’s condo. The tainted drink sickened the new girlfriend and Lewis was dead when he was found the following day.

Smith fled to England and it took more than two years to get her back to King County to face the charges. Smith, 58, pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of second degree murder and second degree assault and was sentenced Friday by Superior Court Judge Tim Bradshaw.
