August primary results set for final certification

August primary election results have been certified by all Washington counties. The next step will be for the secretary of state to certify them on Friday, Aug. 19, which will make the results official.

One notable result in Pierce County: write-in candidate Cameron Severns (D) got enough votes to advance to November’s general election, where he will face Republican Cyndy Jacobsen.

Jacobson had been running unopposed for the 25th Legislative District which covers Puyallup and part of Pierce County.

The State of Washington settles with four psychiatric nurses for $2 million

A judge has sided with four workers from  Washington’s biggest psychiatric hospital, Western State, ordering the state to pay them more than $2 million.

They were hurt by a Western State patient who has a history of violence against women.

Witnesses say he jumped over a desk in one attack, knocked an employee to the ground, choked her, and then bit off part of her earlobe.

Their lawsuit claims supervisors at Western State and the Department of Social and Health Services failed to provide a safe workplace.

A department spokesperson says the state will not appeal the verdict.

Western State has a history of workplace and care violations.

Light rail riders prepare for service delays

Some big light rail delays begin this Friday, Aug. 19.

Sound Transit says they’re working on the Columbia City station platform. That means every other train headed southbound will end at the Stadium Station, instead of heading to Angle Lake.

If your train ends at Stadium Station, you’ll have to wait there until the next train shows up, about ten minutes later, in order to continue traveling south.

Sound Transit says the delays will last through September 1.
