Lack of snow forces Summit at Snoqualmie to shut down entirely

After doing all it can to keep at least some runs open despite one of the worst snow years in decades, the Summit at Snoqualmie is throwing in the towel and shutting down completely after Wednesday.

“We’ve put up a solid fight and while it’s not over yet, we have to call it for the time being,” says marketing manager Guy Lawrence.

The lack of snow had already forced the closure of all the Summit areas except Alpental. And while there’s still enough snow up top, there isn’t enough on the main run down to the base area.

“We’ve been doing a really good job every night of pulling snow from all over the place and getting it out on the hill, but the warm temperatures at night are making it impossible to climb the slope in our groomers to continue repair work.”

Lawrence says the resort is holding out hope for a return to more winter like weather, but there’s no snow in the forecast for at least the next ten days.

“Unfortunately, Mother Nature is playing her hand. While we really hoped to at least get through the holiday weekend, our crews just can’t climb the hill. It’s tough to say that because we’ve fought really hard this winter to try and produce some slopes for people to have fun on.”

Lawrence says some staff members are heading to other areas back east operated by parent company Boyne, but most are simply out of work.

The company is continuing to offer free skiing to Summit season pass holders at other Boyne-owned resorts including Crystal Mountain.
