Lake Washington High School students will temporarily shift to remote learning starting Monday due to staffing shortages related to COVID-19, the Lake Washington School District announced Sunday night.

State superintendent: Still a chance of school closures, but decision will fall to districts

School officials said the decision was made due to the district’s inability to safely operate the school, resulting from “so many staff being absent and the number of unfilled sub positions.”

The district said it has attempted to fill uncovered administrative, classroom, and supervisory positions over the past week but said there are more absences than it is able to cover.

“As I have said, our goal has been to keep our schools open for in-person learning with the knowledge that we may need to close a school. I greatly appreciate your understanding as we navigate the current situation,” Superintendent Dr. Jan Holmen said.

Moving to remote learning will allow instruction to continue “while our staff members complete their quarantine requirements.”

Holmen said all extracurricular activities are canceled Monday, Jan. 10. All field trips will be postponed during the remote learning period, which runs through Jan. 18.

Here’s the schedule for the next week:

1/10 — Students will engage in asynchronous remote learning while staff plan for the switch to synchronous remote

1/11 — Students will engage in asynchronous remote learning while staff plan for the switch to synchronous remote

1/12 — Students will engage in synchronous remote learning on the normal bell schedule

1/13 — Students will engage in synchronous remote learning on the normal bell schedule

1/14 — Students will engage in synchronous remote learning on the normal bell schedule

1/17 — No school, MLK holiday

1/18 — Students will engage in synchronous remote learning on the normal bell schedule

Students are expected to return to in-person learning Wednesday, Jan. 19.
