Traffic on I-5 in Lakewood snarled by standoff Tuesday evening

A crash and ensuing standoff blocked traffic on I-5 in Lakewood just past Gravelly Lake Drive on Tuesday evening. Traffic in both directions was blocked for approximately an hour, before repairs started opening up lanes around 5:30 p.m.
A suspect was inside his car crashed into a concrete median, threatening his own life.
He was armed with a knife, and police attempted non-lethal methods to remove him. A negotiator was on the scene.
Some time after the crash, the man peacefully exited the vehicle and submitted himself to police custody.
After the man was taken in custody, WSDOT worked to remove the wreckage and repair the barrier.
The pursuit began when the suspect was driving 100 miles per hour past a police car. The car then struck a semi south of Gravelly Lake, crashing the semi into the barrier and sending the truck into northbound lanes.

The semi was completely straddling the cement barrier, although the driver of the semi appeared to largely be unharmed.
