Luke Burbank: Taking advantage of every last minute of summer

We get another warm summer weekend after a scorcher last weekend. Lucky us.
However, according to The Seattle Times, the average temperatures will begin to dip next Thursday by one degree and then another degree in the following week. Next thing you know, it’ll be a nice 42 degrees.
Yes, this is not a revelation, it happens every year. The days get shorter and the summer turns to a long fall, then winter, spring, and so on. Ah, the cycles of life.
But this year, Luke Burbank, who is a native but did spend a short stint in Los Angeles, is fed up.
“I don’t think that it’s reasonable that we get two weekends of summer.”
In defense of Mother Nature, the KING-5 extended forecast has a lot of yellow and no raindrops. Maybe there’s a chance of three weekends of summer.
Luke has always, wrongly, defended Seattle summers as late bloomers with beautiful Septembers, that is until Dave Ross reminded him that our annual arts-music festival is called ‘Bumbershoot.’
It seems Luke is right some of the time. In 2011, 10 days were 80 degrees or hotter. Compared to our June this year, when we only hit 70 or hotter eight times, that’s a pretty bright future. But if Luke wants the full story, Sept. 2010 only had one day of 80 or warmer and Sept. 2009 had five. In a nutshell, September is a gambler’s month. Check the official graphs.
Obviously, there’s nothing Luke or any other sun worshipper can do but complain and move to Spokane or Kansas.
The positive side of having only hours of real heat means we Northwesterners take full advantage when it’s nothing but blue sky. How many sunburns did you count Monday at work coming off of a sunny Seafair weekend?
Luke knows he isn’t the only one to turn into a sun zombie, forcing himself out of a stupor early Sunday morning and into his all-too revealing shorts.
So enjoy it while it lasts and lock it away for memories on those long (or rather, short) January days.
