A man being chased by Fife police was struck and killed by multiple vehicles after running in front of traffic on southbound I-5 Friday morning.

All southbound lanes I-5 near Port of Tacoma Road were initially closed, but crews were able to reopen two lanes shortly after the man was hit. Traffic backed up for miles as law enforcement investigated.

All lanes reopened around 9:30 a.m.

The man “decided he would attempt to cross eight lanes of I-5,” Washington State Trooper Todd Bartolac told KIRO Radio. “Unfortunately, he didn’t make it and was struck by multiple cars.”

The chase began when Fife police were called about an unwanted person near a motel, according to the Tacoma News Tribune. The man initially talked to police but ran after realizing he may have a warrant.

Police say they stopped chasing the man when he got near the freeway and yelled at him not to go onto I-5.
