Police are searching for a driver who hit and killed a man and then fled the scene.

It happened on the eastbound SR 518 onramp from Des Moines Memorial Drive in SeaTac at 1:47 a.m. The ramp was blocked until around 6:10 a.m.

The Washington State Patrol said a 44-year-old passenger was standing outside an SUV after the vehicle ran out of gas. The passenger was struck by another driver, who did not stop.

It appeared the passenger was trying to put gas in the SUV when he was hit.

Troopers say the hit-and-run vehicle was a work or utility truck with a built-in toolbox and a hoist in the back. There was also a bag of rugby balls in the truck bed.

After the crash, which sheared off the side of the SUV, the truck struggled to leave the scene.
