Everett police are investigating how a 24-year-old man ended up dead at the hands of authorities.
“There are at least four different scenes. So, there are bullet casings at all of those scenes. There are witnesses at all of those scenes. So, this is a massive investigation,” said Meeghan Black, a law enforcement spokesperson, said.
A man shot at sheriff’s deputies in north Everett, leading to a brief manhunt that ended with him being shot to death. Deputies were not injured in the exchange of gunfire around 12:30 p.m. near the Rivers Landing Apartment in the 3000 block of 9th Street.
The search closed Marine View Drive for a time.
One woman, Braunynn Collins lives right in the middle of the manhunt that spanned her neighborhood. By the time they reached her home, she said police and the suspect were shooting at each other.
“It was so many, it was like a machine gun almost. da da da da at the same time,” Collins told KIRO 7.
The incident started with the Pacific Northwest Violent Offenders Task Force attempting to serve a warrant to a 24-year-old man at the River Landing Apartment complex. That’s when two other armed men walked up to an officer as he was in his squad car.
“Then the subject that they were looking for, came out and there was another altercation. That subject fired a shot into the ground and fled the scene on foot,” said Black.
Earlier the sheriff’s office tweeted the suspect was “armed and dangerous.”
Around 1 p.m., deputies reported “shots fired” in the 800 block of Linden Street. Deputies reported the man was “in custody” and that, “he has a gunshot wound.”
Everett Community College was placed on lockdown during the police chase. The lockdown was lifted by 1:20 p.m., according to the school’s Twitter account.
Police found the 24-year-old shortly after the shootout with a gunshot wound. They tried to save him but he died.
“This is shocking to me because this is a quiet place here,” Collins added.
Police haven’t said who the suspect is or why they were serving him a warrant. They also have not said if the other two, armed men knew the suspect or if they’ll face charges.
The three officers who fired at the man are with three different agencies. They’re with Lynnwood police, Everett police, and the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office. Tonight, all three are on administrative leave.
