An Orting man accused of attacking his neighbor’s dog Kona
with a hatchet is expected to make an appearance in court
Monday.

Ricky Lee Knowles, 55, was arrested and charged with first-
degree animal cruelty after police found the seriously
injured dog tied to a pole in his garage. The golden
retriever suffered numerous injuries including a crushed
skull and broken jaw.

KOMO TV reported veterinarian who treated him
called him a “lucky boy” to be alive.

Police found blood-splattered cutting tools, dog treats and
a bloody garbage can when they served a search warrant at
Knowles’ home, according to The News Tribune.

Kona’s owner told police Knowles had complained about the
dog’s barking in the past but thought the matter had been
settled. Knowles allegedly lured the dog out of the yard
with treats before the vicious attack. Kona is said to be
doing well at home with his family.

Knowles pleaded not guilty.
