The Seattle Weekly says the Mariners don’t plan to renew its Safeco Field lease without taxpayer funds.

The $180 million in question from the King County hotel/motel tax was laid out in a proposal in May by the King County Council, part of which was meant for stadium maintenance. But some council members argued that the money should go to affordable housing instead.

According to emails obtained by The Weekly, the Mariners say they won’t move forward in renewing the lease unless that money goes to maintenance.

The Mariners’ current lease expires at the end of 2018.
