Annual MLK Day march in Seattle, more events in Western Washington

An annual march and rally for Martin Luther King Jr. Day moves through Seattle Monday.
The march began at Garfield High School at 23rd and Jefferson at 12:30 p.m. working its down Capitol Hill before stopping at Westlake Park in downtown Seattle for a rally with speakers and entertainment between 1:30 to 2:45 p.m. More information.

The march was headed west on East Pine Street toward Westlake close to 2 p.m. Monday afternoon.

This year, the Seattle MLK organizing Coalition is partnering with Seattle Womxn Marching Forward, which will also be joining in the events.
There are also events at Garfield throughout the day as follows:
Opportunity Fair – 8:30 to 11 a.m.
A job fair that includes an on-site resume workshop. Employers who participate are required to have available positions with the possibility of on site-hires and a mandatory $15 minimum wage. Most companies will hire people with previous convictions, according to the event description.
Workshops – 9:30 to 10:50 a.m.
A variety of workshops including such topics as racial justice, affirmative action, diversity, bullying, homelessness and others. See the full list of topics here.
Rally in gymnasium – 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Includes music, speakers and entertainment. See full program here.
Community Meal – (estimated time) 2:30 to 3:30 p.m.
The theme of this year’s program is “Affirmative action = justice.”

Tacoma celebrates the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with an award ceremony for a local community leader and a keynote speech from University of Puget Sound President Isiaah Crawford.

The City of Bellingham’s annual Martin Luther King Jr. event will celebrate “Mothers of the Movement” this year with a program centered on the role of women and women of color in the Civil Rights Movement, the struggle of women of color in the modern world, and how the harmonious ring of Dr. King’s dream for racial equity and equality can still be felt and fulfilled today.

Celebrate and honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. with Kids and Race at Ravenna Brewing Co. $1 of every pint sold will be donated to kidsandrace.org, a non-profit organization that provides workshops, lectures, and childhood education dedicated to cultural awareness and social responsibility.
