According to a press release, Seattle Mayor Ed Murray will throw the ceremonial first pitch at Safeco Field on Thursday to start the Mariners’ final homestand of the regular season with a four-game series against the Athletics. But, it turns out Murray will hand the honor off to a different city employee.
A Mariners spokesperson said this will be the second time Murray’s been given first-pitch honors, though this will be the first time in such a big moment inside Safeco Field. The Mariners entered Wednesday two games out of the wild card with five games to play.
Murray will accompany Amina Saleh to the mound and she will throw the pitch. Saleh is a Seattle firefighter and volunteer instructor at Camp Blaze, which mentors girls interested in careers in fire service. The Mariners said it was Mayor Ed Murray’s idea to use the opportunity to highlight a City of Seattle employee for her good work.
Mayor Ed Murray’s most recent time in the spotlight came Monday when he proposed adding another $12 million to Seattle’s homeless crisis while unveiling his 2017-2018 budget for the City of Seattle. The money will go toward the city’s new homelessness plan, “Pathways Home,” which is described as “Seattle’s person-centered plan to support people experiencing homelessness.”
It may be interesting to see the type of reception given to Murray, who had a 70 percent approval rating in 2014 but has had a hectic year in office and is up for re-election in 2017.
