Memorial service for fallen Bothell Police Officer Shoop

Aug 4, 2020, 9:09 AM | Updated: 10:31 pm

A memorial service for fallen Bothell Police Officer Jonathan Shoop is being held Tuesday, Aug. 4. It is a private event, but there is a live stream of the memorial on the Bothell Police’s Facebook page.

Governor Jay Inslee has asked for flags to be lowered to half-staff all day in Shoop’s memory.

Officer Shoop was shot and killed on July 13, 2020, during a traffic stop that turned into a pursuit. It was announced after an investigation that the bullet that killed officer Shoop came from his partner’s firearm during crossfire with the suspect.

Shoop had been with the department for a little over a year. He left a job in the tech industry because he had a desire to do something bigger than himself, Captain Mike Johnson said, and to be part of something that could impact the community.

Prior to his job in the tech industry, Shoop served as a member of the Coast Guard.

“He was definitely a servant type officer,” Johnson told KIRO Radio’s Dori Monson Show. “He was compassionate and empathetic with people. He treated people the right way. And it’s just a big loss for our community, a big loss for our department, and a huge loss for his family.”

Shoop is survived by his fiance, his mother, and two brothers.

Community mourns as memorial for slain Bothell officer continues to grow

Families and community members were previously paying their respects at a memorial set up outside the police department where a police vehicle had been adorned with dozens of bouquets, messages on signs, and balloons, sheltered under a large white awning.
