The Muckleshoot Indian Tribe warned families of cougar sightings Thursday.

“Due to multiple mountain lion/cougar sightings reported today, Thursday, January 29, 2026, we are asking families to take extra precautions this afternoon,” the Muckleshoot Indian Tribe stated on Facebook.

Families were advised to have a parent or guardian present when a child is dropped off at a bus stop or at home.

How to handle a cougar encounter

If face-to-face with a cougar, stop, pick up small children immediately, and do not run, the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife stated on its website.

Next, face the cougar and talk to it firmly while slowly backing away, and always leave the animal an escape route.

Appear larger than the cougar by standing on a rock, holding open a jacket, or standing shoulder-to-shoulder if in a group.

“Do not take your eyes off the cougar or turn your back,” WDFW stated. “Do not crouch down or try to hide.”

The agency also warned against approaching the animal or offering it food.

If the cougar doesn’t leave, be more assertive. If it becomes more aggressive, officials tell people to shout, wave their arms, or throw something at it.

“The idea is to convince the cougar that you are not prey, but a potential danger,” WDFW stated.

If the animal does attack, officials tell people to be aggressive and try to stay on their feet.
