A semi-truck that slammed into the I-5 barrier in the Lakewood area caused multiple crashes and jammed the morning commute for drivers on Wednesday.

The crash occurred around 8 a.m. near 96th Street, according to Washington State Trooper Guy Gill. Both directions of I-5 were down to one lane, according to KIRO Radio traffic reporter Chris Sullivan.

The truck, which was traveling southbound, lost control and struck the jersey barrier, Gill said. The force of the collision pushed at least three other barriers into the northbound lanes, causing multiple collisions. A total of six other passenger vehicles were involved in the crash, Gill said. Four had to be towed.

Because of all the debris on the roadways and a ruptured fuel tank on the semi-truck, Gill expected cleanup to be extensive.

There were no serious injuries, according to Gill.

The crash is caused at least 4-mile backups in both directions, according to Sullivan. It is also caused “very slow” traffic on SR 512.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
