The crash happened just south of Cloverdale Street, near the South Park neighborhood, just before 11 p.m. Thursday.
Troopers said a 17-year-old male was speeding when the car smashed into the pole of an overhead freeway sign, ricocheted into the median, and exploded into flames. Debris was scattered across the roadway. The driver was trapped in the car and died at the scene.
