It’s been years since the iconic Rainier ‘R’ towered over
I-5 in South Seattle. Even though it’ll never stand atop
the old brewery, the sign will soon shine again.

The 12-foot-high red ‘R’ was saved from the scrapheap by
the
Musuem of Science and Industry. The museum is moving to a
new location in South Lake Union this fall, and lovers of
famous brew figured it was a good time to restore it to
its
former glory.

Rainier is now brewed by a conglomerate run by Pabst
Brewing, which will pay for all the paint and polish along
with the 258 individual light bulbs.

But in a clever marketing move, the company is getting
people to go to a new website and click on one of the
light bulbs to reveal a challenge. Among them are
creating a sculpture out of Rainier cans, getting a
Rainier tattoo, and mowing the lawn in the shape of the
‘R’. For each completed challenge, another light gets
lit.

Winners will get to attend the official relighting of the
sign at a special ceremony in December. No word if the
party will be BYOB.
