Northgate pedestrian and bike bridge to be installed over two weekends

Over the next two weekends — June 12-13 and 19-20 — the Seattle Department of Transportation will be installing the two bridge spans for the Northgate pedestrian and bike bridge. In order to complete the installation, there will be two separate overnight closures of I-5 to assemble each span in the median of I-5.
The bridge is estimated to open in fall 2021.
The first span installation will be from 11:59 p.m. on June 12 to 4 a.m. on June 13. Northbound I-5 will be closed during that time between Lake City Way and Northgate Way. Traffic will be detoured onto Lake City Way Northeast. The northbound on ramp at Northeast 85th Street will also be closed, with traffic detoured to Aurora Avenue.
The second installation is scheduled for 11:59 a.m. on June 19 to 4 a.m. on June 20. At that time, southbound I-5 will be closed between Northgate Way and Northeast 85th Street. The detour will be onto SR 99.
Light rail service to Northgate beings in October
SDOT requests that drivers plan ahead for these closures and allow for extra travel time. If you don’t need to go to Seattle, avoid the detour entirely by taking I-405.

The Northgate pedestrian and bike bridge is part of a plan to build a community hub. It will connect North Seattle College on one side of I-5 to the new Link light rail station at Northgate, which will open for service on Oct. 2, 2021.
