An Auburn police officer shot a man Thursday night after attempting to arrest the suspect, who had a warrant out for his arrest.

The incident happened near Fenster Nature Park.

Officers were responding to a call about a blocking disabled car in the 300 block of T Street Southeast when they confirmed that one of the individuals involved with the vehicle had a warrant out for his arrest. The male ran from the officers, who then pursued on foot. The man pointed a handgun toward the pursuing officers, and one officer shot the man in response to this threat.

The Auburn Police Department posted the following release on its Facebook page:

Auburn OIS

First aid was provided immediately. As fire and medic crews arrived to provide further aid, the man was pronounced dead at the scene. A handgun was located on the ground next to the male. No police officers were hurt.

The Valley Independent Investigative Team is taking over the investigation of this incident.
