Washington state has granted Snohomish County $500,000 in an effort to complete the Oso Slide Memorial, according to the Everett Herald.

Families, community gather Monday to remember victims of Oso mudslide

The Oso Slide Memorial Committee and county have netted $2.6 million, including the grant and donated services, for the project that honors the 43 lives lost in the March 2014 mudslide and the first responders in the recovery effort.

“The story of the SR 530 landslide is an important one to share,” Snohomish County Executive Dave Somers told the Herald. “It is a difficult story, but one of hope, community and resilience, and the memorial will be a place where people can come together to learn and find inspiration.”

The Herald reports the grant comes from the Recreation and Conservation Funding Board, which has provided funding to reactional amenities, habitat conservation, and protection of forest and farms.

The Oso memorial includes a boardwalk that winds through individual memorials for specific people lost in the slide. It also includes benches and a welcoming circle, all with the slide landscape as a backdrop.

The estimated cost to complete the memorial is $6 million dollars, which includes design and permitting, construction, and the creation of an endowment.
