Pacific Mayor Cy Sun is at it again. The write-in mayor has put the city’s top two cops on paid leave, leaving the city with only a few officers on the job.
Mayor Sun put Police Chief John Calkins and Lieutenant Edwin Massey on leave during an investigation of harassment and intimidation, and then he threatened all city employees with firing if they spoke with reporters about it.
Tracey Apada, who heads the recall effort against the 82-year-old mayor, says she wonders why he is trying to keep people quiet.
“He sent out a memo and told all the city employees they were not to speak to the media, they were not to speak to the lieutenant and they were not to speak to the chief,” says Apada. “What is he hiding?”
Apata says break-in’s and other crime are way up in the city since there are only five officers watching a city of 6,000.
“It’s just a matter of time before the property crimes become something and somebody gets hurt. It’s just a matter of time before something like that happens, and that’s going to be on the mayor’s head,” says Apata.
Many residents blame Mayor Sun for ruining the city in the 16 months he’s been in office. The city nearly lost its insurance over his decisions.
The mayor sent me an email Monday night saying he couldn’t discuss his decisions.
