Two motorcycle riders suffered serious, life-altering injuries Monday night after colliding with the back of a van stopped at a red light in Pierce County, according to the Pierce County Sheriff’s Office.

The crash occurred at approximately 7:45 p.m. at the intersection of Spanaway Loop Road South and 116th Street South.

Responding deputies found the driver, a 69-year-old man, and his passenger, a 73-year-old woman, lying in the roadway. Emergency responders took both victims to a local hospital for immediate care.

Deputies confirmed the van driver was not injured.

Investigators say preliminary findings indicate the motorcyclist was driving recklessly before the crash. The Pierce County Sheriff’s Office Traffic Unit is continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Sheriff’s officials issued a public reminder following the collision, cautioning drivers about the dangers of unsafe driving.

“We ask everyone to please slow down, stay alert, and make safe choices behind the wheel,” the department stated. “Reckless driving can have life-altering consequences, not only for those behind the wheel, but for everyone sharing the road.”
