Pierce County Sheriff Ed Troyer hit with no-contact order ahead of criminal trial

Jun 7, 2022, 7:18 AM | Updated: 7:22 am

Pierce County Sheriff Ed Troyer has been ordered to stay a thousand feet away from a Black newspaper carrier, Sedrick Altheimer, who is suing him over a confrontation last year.

Altheimer is the man Troyer erroneously told emergency operators and officers was trying to kill him in 2021.

Some police say Troyer later backed off that claim.

Monday, a judge cited “a course of conduct of unlawful harassment,” in ruling Pierce County Sheriff Ed Troyer must steer clear of Altheimer for one year.

Altheimer said Troyer has followed him in an SUV, circling around and flashing his lights as Altheimer delivered newspapers in Tacoma.

Troyer’s attorney said the Sheriff had encountered Altheimer only once since the 2021 incident.

He said Troyer wouldn’t testify at Monday’s hearing, because of a criminal case pending against him.

Pierce County Sheriff Troyer says he knew charges were ‘coming since day one’

Washington Attorney General Bob Ferguson charged Troyer with two misdemeanors: one count of false reporting and one count of making a false or misleading statement to a civil servant, stemming from Troyer’s original encounter with Altheimer.

The case was originally slated to go to trial in July, but has been pushed back to October.
