Pierce County Transit approves massive service cuts

Bus service in Pierce County will face major reductions to every line after the Pierce County Transit Board voted Monday to cut service by 28 percent.
Board members said they had no choice after voters rejected an increased sales tax last year that would have allowed the agency to maintain current service levels.
The cuts include eliminating or combining routes and greatly reducing service on others. Weekend service would go way down and so would service after 7 p.m.
Service would also be cut during the midday.
The decision comes after more than 80 staff members were already laid off, KING 5 reported.
Several Pierce County towns have begun discussing creation of an independent transit system.
The cuts will take effect in September.
