Police arrest woman for breaking court order protecting Seattle mayor

A woman was booked into King County Jail for breaking a court order that protects Seattle Mayor Jenny Durkan.

Seattle police arrested a woman Monday after she violated an anti-harassment protection order in place between the suspect and the mayor that prohibits the suspect from contacting the mayor or going near her residence or workplace. She violated that by going to Mayor Durkan’s home over the weekend.

The 38-year-old suspect reportedly went to the mayor’s house and left a bag of papers on her lawn.

“The Seattle Police Department will fully investigate any threat made against any public official and will work with prosecutors to ensure they are held responsible,” the SPD Blotter states.

A spokesperson for Mayor Durkan also issued a statement on Thursday, blaming the release of her address on a protest at her home last year with Councilmember Kshama Sawant.

Over the last 18 months, the Mayor has seen a significant increase in death threats, and violent, homophobic, and misogynistic vandalism painted at her family home and the surrounding neighborhood. The harassment and threats have continued from multiple individuals, including the individual who was arrested earlier this week for violating an Anti-Harassment Order issued against her in King County District Court. That order was entered after the individual made death threats, and stalked and harassed the Mayor at her home on multiple occasions over a number of months.

SPD detectives have investigated several other unrelated threats against elected officials. In February, investigators forwarded a case involving threats against a city councilmember to the City Attorney’s office, and in April, police arrested a man for telephone harassment of the mayor.
