Initial primary results Tuesday night have incumbent Senator Maria Cantwell facing Republican Susan Hutchison in the upcoming November election.

Cantwell held 55 percent of the vote Tuesday night with Hutchison at 24 percent. All other candidates trailed at below three percent of the vote.

Senator Cantwell faced more challengers in this primary than she has in the past, The Seattle Times reports; a total of 28 candidates which include 13 Republicans, four Democrats, five independents, and handful of Libertarians, Socialists, etc. Among that crowd was Joey Gibson, popular for his high-profile, provocative Conservative rallies in Liberal communities. Also, GoodSpaceGuy was back on the ballot.

Cantwell is fighting to hold onto her job representing Washington in the United States Senate. She has been a senator since 2001 and is currently in her third term.

Hutchison led the pack of primary challengers, however. She recently stepped down from her role as chair of the Republican Party of Washington to run against Democrat Cantwell.

Washington’s primary election sends the top two candidates — regardless of political party — to the November election. Initial ballot results were released at 8 p.m. Tuesday. The results will be updated Wednesday afternoon.
