The Puget Sound region could be set for a heat wave this weekend, with temperatures in some areas getting into the mid-to-upper 90s.

That begins on Saturday, where lowland areas situated in the interior away from Puget Sound will see temperatures in the upper 80s and low 90s. The real heat will arrive Sunday, with temperatures expected to peak in the upper 90s in the South Seattle area, according to the most recent forecast.

Most other areas closer to Puget Sound will see temperature in the upper 80s to low 90s. The hottest weather is expected further south near Olympia and Chehalis.

The National Weather Service warns that Sunday’s heat will be “widespread” across the region, and “will raise heat risk concerns with most areas.”

“Conditions this warm and dry also raise fire weather concerns, especially in the Cascades,” the NWS’s weekend forecast reads.

Because of that risk factor, the state has ordered a burn ban on all public and private forest land, totaling roughly 12 million acres. This comes after a series of wildfires started last week near Wenatchee, Tonasket, Nespelem, and Synarep, respectively.

The burn ban will be in effect until Sept. 30 barring any large-scale improvement to conditions across the state.

Hot weather will persist in the Seattle area on Monday and Tuesday of next week, with temperatures expected to range between the mid and upper 80s. After that, things will begin to cool down again.

“Finally, by Wednesday, a stronger onshore push will bring conditions back to normal,” the NWS predicts, with temperatures over that period dipping back into the mid 70s.
