There is still no suspect in last Friday’s deadly shooting of two teens at a bus stop near Rainier Beach High School. The community is rallying to call for an end to gun violence in the Rainier Valley and help the families with expenses during this difficult time.
“It’s been overwhelming. People are stepping up left and right, donating and asking how they can help. We’re trying to keep people from reaching out to the family because they’re dealing with so much right now,” Charles Davis, owner of C. Davis Texas BBQ, said.
Davis got involved and started a GoFundMe account because his son knew the victims. He played basketball with them at the Rainier Beach Community Center.
“I just wanted to step up and be a light in the community. I know they’re dealing with a lot of burdens, so I just wanted to do my part, try to raise as much money as I can to help pay for food and then pay for funeral services,” Davis said.
GoFundMe for Rainier Beach families raises more than $7,500
As of this writing, the GoFundMe Supporting Families After Seattle Tragedy has raised more than $7,500.
“They can use all the help they can get. They’re struggling right now to even come to grips with what just happened, so any financial assistance that can help the families would be a huge support,” Davis said.
For these families, Davis said the money will help right now, even if it can’t end the pain, loss, or grief. Davis believes the community and families must look within to solve the problem of youth-related gun violence.
“You can’t keep blaming somebody else when it starts at home. If you don’t start at home, you can’t control it in the streets. So, at some point, we’re going to have to stop doing these protests and figure out another way to help with this gun violence,” Davis said.
Anyone with information about this shooting should call 911 or Crimestoppers of Puget Sound at 800-222-TIPS.
