Washington’s only IKEA is one step closer to getting a complete overhaul.

The Swedish-based company selected Deacon Corp. as the construction manager and general contractor for its new store in Renton, which is expected to open in 2017.

“With the store’s success and high awareness among consumers, we are excited for the chance to build a new IKEA store from the ground-up, adjacent to the current store and on land we already own,” said IKEA U.S. CFO Rob Olson when the new IKEA was announced.

“A new store at this same location would allow coworkers to offer customers an updated and enhanced shopping experience,” he said.

What are they building?

The new store will be built where the current IKEA’s covered parking is located. The current store will eventually be demolished to allow more parking, according to information from IKEA.

Once complete, the new IKEA will be an estimated 406,000 square feet and have two levels. There will be nearly 1,700 parking stalls.

The larger Seattle-area IKEA store will feature nearly 10,000 exclusively-designed items, 50 room-settings, three model home interiors, a supervised children’s play area, and a larger restaurant for serving Swedish specialties.

IKEA sits on 29 acres near State Highway 167. The store’s current building was built in 1979 and was originally a warehouse for aerospace electronics until it was converted into the retail store in 1994. It remains Washington’s only IKEA.
