With fewer than 10 seconds left in the fourth quarter of Super Bowl LX, Mike Macdonald and John Schneider stood frozen, hearts pounding, breath caught somewhere between hope and terror. They watched the final tackle unfold, silently begging and pleading for Patriots running back TreVeyon Henderson to be tackled in bounds, for the clock to keep bleeding away.

And it did. Time expired.

The dam broke. They screamed raw, uncontrollable shouts of relief, joy, and utter disbelief as they spun toward each other and collapsed into an embrace. In that instant, every heartbreak, every near miss, every year of waiting came rushing back. This wasn’t just a win. It was the moment they had been holding onto for more than a decade, finally real, finally theirs.

It was one of hundreds, if not thousands, of similar celebrations that played out inside Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara on Sunday. And the 12s shared their thoughts after the final whistle blew.

Relief and joy

“It’s so exciting,” Susan, a longtime Seahawks season ticket holder, explained.

“Oh, it’s just like amazing feeling to be out here,” Matt, a teenage fan, exclaimed. “It’s been 12 years, it’s been a minute, especially against this team.”

“We flew up this morning,” another 12 shared. “We knew we had a good shot. We played our game, and, yeah, we’re world champions.”

For the region, for the 12s

“I love when the city just gets together, just has a great time. It’s awesome,” Mark from Everett explained. “It means everything … this is great, like we are one team, and for the fans to be a part of that team and to bring home this championship, it’s … the words can’t explain it. It’s amazing.”

“I guess it’s absolutely unbelievable,” another fan in Santa Clara said. “We’ve been waiting so long. This is so incredible. Can’t believe it.”

“What’s wonderful about this was the way the season started,” Tony, a longtime fan, added. “We weren’t expected to be here, and this team is so solid, and they stick together, and they show up, and they get down to business and win, and they’re just an honor to watch this year. It’s amazing. It was a once-in-a-lifetime experience that I’ll maybe get to experience again.”

Malcolm Butler and ‘the’ interception

In what felt like a cruel joke from the NFL — a deliberate jab at the heart of every 12 — Malcolm Butler, the man forever tied to Seattle’s greatest Super Bowl wound, strode out before kickoff and rang the Patriots’ “Keeper of the Light” bell. The same Butler who intercepted Russell Wilson at the goal line in Super Bowl XLIX now stood center stage, smirking through history. He rang the bell with an almost theatrical arrogance, savoring the moment, as if twisting a familiar knife just a little deeper into the backs of Seahawks fans everywhere.

After the game, 12s bit back.

“You know? Oh, they wanted a repeat, but we were not going to let that happen,” one 12 said.

“It’s in the past,” another explained. “Yeah, it’s Super Bowl LX. We’re World Champs. That’s the future. Let’s go!”

“They tried to be salty, but that’s all right,” Karen, a Seahawks fan at the Super Bowl, said. “It didn’t have an impact, just like Mike McDonald said, we did not care.”

Macdonald himself played dumb.

“I don’t remember it. What interception? I don’t know what you’re referring to,” he said. “Malcolm, who? Nope, we’re done. We’re done here.”

In the end, the Seahawks captured their second Super Bowl title with a commanding 29-13 victory over the Patriots. And it was a night of redemption and glory that finally ended years of heartbreak. Seattle brought the Lombardi Trophy back home again.
