A man and his mother were injured in Seattle’s First Hill neighborhood over the weekend, after reportedly being struck by a woman wielding a hatchet.

Should Seattle council shoulder the blame for city’s ‘violent crime spike’?

Initially, the two victims — a 40-year-old man and his 64-year-old mother — had called 911 around 9 p.m. on Saturday to report the attack near 8th Avenue and James Street. The man suffered a “large cut to his shin,” while his mother refused medical attention with “less serious injuries.”

The incident began after the man picked a dollar bill up off the ground, after which a woman yelled at them while swinging a hatchet. The man fought back by hitting the suspect in the head with his skateboard.

Police then located the suspect near where the assault was said to have taken place and took her into custody. The suspect is receiving care for a wound to her head, and will be booked into King County Jail for assault after her release from the hospital.
