Seattle Police hope to hire 30-40 new officers

Feb 27, 2012, 3:49 PM | Updated: 5:16 pm

The Seattle Police Department is putting out the help
wanted sign; but while many will apply, few will even be
considered.

SPD is looking to hire 30 to 40 entry level officers in 2012, according to Officer Renee Witt. Applicants have to meet strict basic requirements and pass rigorous physical, written and psychological exams.

“We have to go through quite a few applicants just to get
to that 30-40 we’re looking to hire, so we’re hoping that people will come out in the thousands,” Witt says.

She says people apply from all over the country for the
coveted jobs, many from the military or other law
enforcement agencies.

It’s dangerous, it’s stressful and you won’t get rich: So why would someone want a job that’s always under scrutiny and where just making it home everyday is cause for celebration?

“It might sound trite, but I think at the end of the day
each police officer goes home feeling good about getting
to make a difference in society,” Witt says.

Applications are due by April 27. Testing takes place
June 23-24.
