The Seattle School Board is set to vote on a raise for Superintendent Larry Nylund this week, but the proposed 5 percent boost in pay is expected to face opposition.

Nylund’s salary would increase by $13,800 to $289,879, The Seattle Times reports.

A group is expected to show up at the meeting Wednesday with letters from parents and students explaining how the money could be better spent.

For his part, Nylund says he will donate half the increase back to the district’s general fund.

The announcement of a potential raise follows an outcry from parents and teachers over fair pay and teacher re-assignments. That outcry included a teacher strike in the beginning of the year, which shut down Seattle Public Schools. Teachers were demanding better contracts and went on strike for nearly a week.

Though Nyland has mostly been hush over the raise, he told reporters earlier this month that the money he would receive is barely a drop in the bucket to what is needed to solve district issues.

“My raise is not going to solve anywhere near any of the issues that we have on the table,” he said. “I have done better than anybody else. I’m gonna take the smallest raise in the district, as far as I know.”

Quick note: Nyland makes more than Washington Governor Jay Inslee, who makes just over $166,000.
