Seattle Mayor Ed Murray asked residents to shine a light in front of their homes Wednesday night in support of immigrants. The call came shortly after President Donald Trump signed controversial executive orders that Murray called “authoritarian.”

On his own front porch via Facebook live, Murray spoke about the shine a light event. He said it was a way to make a statement, even for those who don’t usually partake in protests or other forms of expression.

“Some who can’t go to protest because they have kids or it’s not their thing and want to show that they are in solidarity with immigrants,” Murray said. “It’s a way for us to simply show on our porches throughout our city, shine a light, and send a message to our neighbors that we are not going to let you be taken out of this city.”

Seattle residents were asked to bring a light to the front of their homes at 7 p.m. Wednesday, and share a photo on social media with the hashtag #ShineALight.
