Seattle ‘Trick or Streets’ permits back for Halloween

The Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) is bringing back its Trick or Streets program for a third year to celebrate Halloween and Dia de Los Muertos.

This program allows neighborhoods an opportunity to close down streets to cars and open them up to the community.

“We are accepting applications now. People can get permits to close their streets for Halloween and Dia de Los Muertos,” said Casey Rogers, the public space planner for SDOT.

While requesting applications to close neighborhood streets is available year-round for communities, SDOT wants to make the process as easy as possible for Halloween. Trick or Streets lasts until 10:00 p.m., according to Rogers.

Block parties and ofrendas are encouraged by SDOT, as the organization has cited that turnout has been exceptional this year. While the deadline was Oct. 15 for guaranteed street closures, Rogers stated they are still accepting applications for permits.

1. You need a permit

3. Remember it’s free
4. Follow the street closure sign (instructions on website)

And if a block party or closing off the street to your neighborhood doesn’t excite you, stay in, pass out candy, and watch scary movies.
