Seattle’s Bertha has been delayed once again

Bertha’s schedule is once again being pushed back.
The boring machine that has faced damage and a slew of delays was slated to start boring under Seattle in late November. That deadline has now been pushed back to late December.

“STP has told us the changes in the schedule reflect the current emphasis on giving crews the time they need to complete the tunneling machine repairs successfully,” the Washington State Department of Transportation states on its website.
The schedule for Bertha is updated each month, the latest change was announced Oct. 22.
“Like all large construction projects, the schedule for this project changes frequently. WSDOT cannot verify any of the dates shown in this schedule.”

The tunnel that would replace the Alaskan Way Viaduct is now expected to open in April 2018. It was originally expected to open this year.
Bertha broke down in Dec. 2013 about 1,000 feet into its 9,000 foot journey from SoDo to South Lake Union.
