Sex offender who illegally crossed border from Canada charged with burglary, rape

A Level III registered sex offender who illegally crossed the border from Canada two years ago has been charged with first-degree burglary and second-degree rape.

Michael Stanley, 49, went in through the window and confronted a 69-year-old woman in her Skyway home located in the 8400 block of S 115 St Friday morning, according to the King County Sheriff’s Office.

According to documents filed in King County Superior Court, Stanley had previously done yard work at the victim’s home.

He showed up on Friday night seeking additional work. She told him she didn’t have any, but investigators said he sneaked back into the home and attacked her.

“The incident occurred one day and the suspect came back the following day,” Sgt. BJ Meyers told KIRO Radio. “The victim had been trying to get help, but hadn’t thought to call police. Sometimes when people go through things like this, they can be in quite a state of shock and not make the clearest choices. But we’re glad she eventually called us and we were able to locate the suspect.”

Police said no weapons were used, but the woman sustained minor injuries.

Stanley faces at least 15-to-20 years if convicted, said Dan Donohoe, a spokesman for the King County Prosecutor’s Office.

The attack came just six days after he was released from custody on another offense: He broke into a suburban Seattle nursing home last December, and was armed with steak knives when a sheriff’s deputy subdued him with a Taser, a prosecutor wrote in charging documents. He was convicted of second-degree burglary for that offense.

The sheriff’s office said Stanley, who is homeless, has been in compliance with Level III requirements since registering as a sex offender in Nov. 2013. He’s required to check in weekly and must provide an accurate account of where he stays every night.

Stanley, a U.S. citizen, cut off his monitoring ankle bracelet in Canada and crossed unchallenged in to the U.S. in 2013. A warrant was issued, but Canada chose not to extradite Stanley.

Stanley ran into trouble soon after arriving in Seattle. He was arrested on misdemeanor charges of harassment and resisting arrest after he threatened someone who asked him to be quiet. He was sentenced to seven months in jail.

In Oct. 2013, the CBC reported Stanley has a history of taking children from playgrounds, and was sentenced for luring two mentally-impaired boys to an apartment in 2006, and in the 1980s he spent time in prison for sexually assaulting an 82-year-old wheelchair bound woman.

Stanley is being held on $1 million bail.
