Six votes difference in Seattle City Council race

Nov 10, 2015, 10:11 PM | Updated: Nov 11, 2015, 5:39 am

Shannon Braddock is ahead of Lisa Herbold in the Seattle City Council District 1 race, but only by six votes.

Lisa Herbold – 11,522 (49.7 percent)
Shannon Braddock – 11,528 (49.73 percent)

According to King County Elections, 25,741 ballots have been counted, of the 27,996 ballots returned.

The latest results were released on Tuesday and because of the Veteran’s Day holiday, that number won’t change until Thursday afternoon.

Braddock was hesitant to declare herself “councilmember elect” the Wednesday following Election Day. “It has a nice ring to it, but I’m holding off just yet,” she told KIRO Radio’s Jason Rantz Show.

As for a potential recount, the King County Elections Office says, “recounts are mandated by law when votes for offices or statewide measures fall within a certain range.”

A recount can also be requested by one of the candidates in a race and must be filed within two business days after certification of the election results. Certification is Nov. 24, three weeks after Election Day. The person requesting the recount is responsible for the cost and must deposit 15 cents for each ballot cast if counted by machine. It’s 25¢ for each ballot cast if counted by hand. The deposit is refunded if the recount reverses the outcome of the race.
