Western Washington air quality greatly improved after Sunday rain, but forecasters say the smoke and haze will linger back until winds turn onshore again Wednesday.

For the first time in weeks, communities around Puget Sound reported “good” air quality Monday morning. The National Weather Service attributed the improvement to the rain, which had been noticeably absent from the region.

An Air Quality Warning was canceled early Monday morning. But the weather service warns that wildfire smoke could drift back into the area later in the day and into Tuesday. Residents should keep an eye on air quality monitors. KIRO 7 Meteorologist Nick Allard says that the haze will return on Monday, but only a “little bit.”

“We have a little bit of rain this week, after a very cool weekend we warm up, so a little bit of everything, but not super smoky,” he said.

KIRO 7 meteorologist Claire Anderson says temperatures will rise on Monday and Tuesday when smoke from British Columbia will be more concentrated. Highs on Tuesday will get close to 80 degrees.

There’s a chance of showers in the forecast on Thursday.

As for Labor Day Weekend, Anderson says expect dry and mild weather.
