Snohomish sheriff’s deputy shoots, kills one suspect near Monroe

Investigators report finding a gun at the scene of a Tuesday morning shooting near Monroe that resulted in the death of a “suspicious” individual, fired upon by a Snohomish County deputy.
It is unknown at this time the role the gun played in the shooting. The recovered gun does not belong to the deputy and is assumed to have been in the possession of the suspect, according to the Associated Press.
“We currently have one male deceased and the Snohomish County Multi-Agency Response Team, the SMART team, will be investigating the incident,” Everett Police Department’s Aaron Snell told KIRO Radio.
The Everett Police Department is taking the lead on the investigation into the shooting.
The suspect who died at the scene is a white male, estimated to be in his 60s, however, investigators do not know the identity of the individual.
The incident occurred shortly around 12:30 a.m. in the 17500 block of Tester Road after someone called 9-1-1 to report a suspicious person.
“This in in a rural area of Snohomish County about a half-mile south of Monroe High School,” KING 5’s Michael Konopaske told KIRO Radio Tuesday morning.
“For the most part, it’s open fields with some trees off in the distance,” Konopasek said. “In fact, when we were coming to this area, the road that we were on didn’t even show up on my smart phone’s navigation application.”
Konopasek noted that unlike the recent Olympia shooting, law enforcement officials are tight-lipped about details of the shooting, and that detectives are saying little to the public until they get sufficient information for their own investigation.
What is known is that after someone in the area called 9-1-1 about a suspicious person in the area, a deputy arrived on the scene at 12:31 a.m., and within five minutes he reported that shots were fired, according to Konopasek.
“It was a suspicious call and that can be a variety of different things,” Snell said. “As detectives start the investigation they will talk with the reporting party to flush out what the concerns were about.”
“We do know that when the officer arrived on scene, ultimately shots were fired,” he said.
The man died at the scene.
The 31-year-old deputy was uninjured. He has been placed on administrative leave while the investigation into the incident proceeds. The deputy has been with the Snohomish Sheriff’s department since 2007.
