Part of a home in Spanaway was destroyed and the people inside are lucky to be alive after a semi-truck plowed into it early Friday.

The homeowners inside were sleeping just six feet away from where the truck went through the house. They were not hurt.

At about 3 a.m., the semi-truck was heading north on Spanaway Loop Road South, when a passenger truck heading south slammed head-on into the semi, causing it to veer into the house near 171st, according to Gary Sanders with the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department.

A vehicle behind the semi-truck also collided with the pickup truck.

Deputies say the driver of the passenger truck appears to have been impaired by drugs or alcohol.

The semi-truck crashed into the front of the house and two cars in the driveway.

The driver of the pickup truck is at the hospital with minor injuries. The semi-truck driver also taken to the hospital but has since been released.

Deputies said they don’t anticipate any charges being filed against the semi-truck driver. Charges are pending for the driver of the pickup.

Homeowner Denny Roose said he and his wife were sleeping when the truck hit.

“(I thought) What’s that? Well, this is not an earthquake. And I got up and my wife was all upset of course. We’ve got quite a few dogs and cats,” said Roose.

The cab of the truck ended up inside the home, causing massive damage. The Sheriff’s Department said one of the center beams is compromised, and the integrity of the home will be evaluated.

“You can’t go down the hall because the whole place is demolished. The rafters, everything. It really wiped it out,” said Roose.

Roose said many antiques and collectibles were destroyed in the crash.

Spanaway Loop Road is closed between Military Road and Cross Base Highway.
